"The Last Tennessee Summer" creates a childhood nostalgia and an excitement for summertime and all the loveliness and romanticism that comes with it.

Summer begins with an exciting bang and ends only a few short months later - leaving us all wanting.

BIRTHDAY INSTAGRAM RECAP

Sunday the 22nd was my birthday. I've never really cared much about birthdays but my friends nonetheless coaxed me out of my shell for a weekend of activities which somehow mostly involved drinking.

Happy Birthday to ME!

OLD HOUSE / BLUE ROOM

The only thing I enjoy more than looking at fashion is getting the opportunity to be hands on.

This was a fun project to work on, especially with the use of the natural light that filled up the old bungalow we shot at.  Our photographer was Phillip Chadwell, makeup by Kenzie Gregg and model, Kathyria Burgos.

The beautiful ruffled top in the final photo was courtesy of one of my talented friends who you can find over at Love, Simone.

You can find more photos from the set HERE.

STYLE STALKER: SANTIGOLD

It's been four long years since Santigold first hit the music scene - helping us to expand our acceptance of  spandex pants worn in public and keeping our eardrums busy with fresh and incredibly catchy beats.  All these many years later I now own two fabulous pairs of spandex pants (Thanks, American Apparel!) and I still have every one of her songs on my iTunes and I'm in no rush to remove them.

Santi White, better known as Santigold, formerly Santogold (Are you confused yet?) is in no rush either. She's plotted and planned and spent the past few years putting together a new album that had exactly what she was after creatively - unwilling to just pump out another album just because it was what everyone else was doing. Say no to peer pressure, everyone! Quality over quantity.

That being said, her new album entitled Master of My Make-Believe was released this past May, a very welcome and very anticipated follow up to her last album. You can find her latest music video entitled "The Keepers" HERE.

Uncompromising on quality, Santigold's style choices also reflect the high standards she has for her music. She leans toward the avant-guard and has a particular fondness for spandex, prints and innovative styles. It's not surprising to see her in something loud and curious, a fact among many - that I absolutely love about her.

Santigold:Trends to try
Sunglasses with funky frames, crop tops, ankle length boots, stripes, sequins and statement necklaces with flair.

Bust out those spandex pants too, you'll thank me later.

SONGSTRESS STYLE: GRIMES

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

It might be too forward a statement, but when I hear the word grime, I've got to admit that the first thing that comes to mind isn't by any extension musical.

I think of the dirt under fingernails or the white film in the shower that just won't go away - regardless of my repeated efforts to scrub it into oblivion.

All awkward word association aside though, Claire Bouche aka Grimes - the 24 year old grunge-pop songstress has been flying high on the radar as of late, despite the eyebrow raising name. Maybe my earlier lament on shower residue was more appropriate; this doe eyed pixie has found her place among the best with her beat infused electro-pop and I have quite the feeling (much like my shower residue) she won't be easily removed.

Some people are just inadvertently stylish, never following trends but creating them. Although Grimes clearly enjoys fashion as an art form, she's very outspoken on her lack of concern for labels and would rather make purchases based on her own personal tastes - which appear to vary. You can tell she's not a slave to the industry like some of her popular counter parts.

Grime's fashion influences do have certain leanings though; a mix of early nineties grunge and teen dream queen. An unlikely pairing, but she makes it work, employing bright hair colors, bindis, fingerless gloves and thick, black eyeliner in her fashion arsenal for maximum bad-assery.

She was even fortunate enough to snag a spot with YSL's Hedi Slimane for Dazed Magazine – who recently released an intoxicatingly refreshing cover featuring a jewelry laden (holy nose rings, Batman) Grimes styled in both Givenchy and Alexander McQueen. Even for someone who doesn’t like labels – that is quite the big deal.

And that’s because Grimes is a big deal. She’s getting comfortable at the top and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing her there for quite some time. Green hair and all.

LIVE IT UP: TIPS ON CREATING THE PERFECT SPACE

Friday, July 13, 2012

"Where thou art, that is home."
- Emily Dickinson

It's in my nature to love old, beat up, rustic things. They have more character; they have a story open to interpretation, which itself adds value to a room that nothing else can quite satisfy.

My mom was an antique fanatic and most of my youth was spent in antique stores, little thrift shops and rummaging through an occasional yard sale or two. She would always choose historical pieces and things that had a multitude of former lives written across them. A spinning wheel (or two), an antique carousel horse, rocking chairs, spindle cabinets and phonographs. Fun things.

I haven't lost that appreciation for well loved pieces full of history and I never will.

Aside from my undying love for antique pieces, I'm also quite the sucker for anything I can do myself. Why spend $100 for a brand new antique replica mirror when I could actually find an antique mirror and paint it to match? Style logic wins again.

So with all of that in mind, here are a few suggestions for creating a playful and inviting space yourself without breaking your budget.

Because I know we all have more important things to buy.
You know.

Like shoes.

LIVE IT UP: TIPS ON CREATING THE PERFECT SPACE

You don't need to spend a fortune creating a perfect zen space. The only two things required are an open mind and a good eye for thrift store finds. There are plenty of fun places you can score sweet swag. Flea markets, estate sales, garage sales and who can forget Craigslist?

I can even go further and suggest you check out your neighborhood back alley. I can't even stress this enough! I've found plenty of treasures behind homes just piled up on top of the trash heap, waiting to be loved and refinished by someone with an open mind and an open heart. Give that trash a chance.

Goodwill. Good for everything. About two years ago I went through a mirror collection phase (craze). Cheap, classy, easy to paint. You can find them for a few dollars just about anywhere, but aim for the ones with more interesting frames.

1. Start a good collection of about 5-8 and make a little gallery of sorts on your wall

2. If the frames have been worn out - or are unreasonably hideous, just use painter's tape to section off the frame from the mirror and give it a good spray. I'd suggest gold, white, or rose gold spray paint. Or if you're into colors - try mint or a bright neon!

3. Hang your collection above a low piece of furniture. That way the statement will predominately be on the amazing collection of vintage mirrors you so stylishly placed on your wall. You'll get so many compliments on your amazingness. Promise.

Honestly, all white is one of my favorite looks in fashion and interior decorating. If I wasn't such a messy klutz, everything I own would probably be white. It's classic, elegant, fresh and bright. I always think of sunshine when I think of all white.

1. A little white spray paint can spruce up your old lifeless pieces. That coffee table you've finally decided to trash would make a great test subject in this experiment.

2. Just get creative with white spray paint. Most everything is spray-paintable! Chairs! Shelves! Knick knacks!

3. If you're too worried about purchasing a white couch just consider throwing some inexpensive sheets over that old dingy thing.

4. If your room ends up looking too much like a dental office - Give that stark white sheet a pop with patterned or neon pillows. Even couch covers can be fairly cheap and easy to change if worse turns to worst. There's always that one person at the party with red wine and a total lack of balance.

5. If you live close enough to an ikea though, you can score some sweet deals on cheap and stylish white furniture without selling your organs on the black market. If that's still just a bit too much for you - then how about reupholstering a few old dinner chairs in stiff white fabric? There are plenty of tutorials online that can help you knock that shit out in less than an hour. Don't underestimate your DIY power!

Cactus and succulents make perfect outdoor statements this time of year! If your home isn't conducive to growing these prickly guys outside, think about bringing a few miniatures indoors or alternatively, succulents - which are just as adorable and significantly less painful to plant.

Spruce up that boring, dirty door with a bright neon shade! I can't get over this. If I owned my own home, this would most certainly be the shade of mine.

It really is a simple, cheap and stylish trick to create an inviting entrance.

This would be another fun project - and contains infinite variations and possibilities!

GET THE LOOK: KIMBRA

Kimbra via Interview & Beat Magazine

With ruby red lips, deep black locks and dewy, porcelain skin, it's easy to believe that Kimbra was ripped right from the pages of our childhood fairy tales.

There is certainly a fanciful and dreamy look surrounding her; at times I halfway expect to see an entourage of dwarves following close behind. But all of that implies a bit of childishness and Kimbra is anything but - even if she does parade around in babydoll dresses, ruffled socks and cute frilly things.

Some of her most iconic pieces revolve around the use of playful, vintage inspired Peter Pan collars. I'm sure you've taken a notice to them over the past year as they've made their resurgence into the fashion world, bringing a wide spectrum of shapes, sizes and pattern variations with them.

KIMBRA INSP II

It's nearly impossible to go shopping these days without picking up a piece or two featuring the rounded or sometimes slightly squared shape. Dresses, tops, even jewelry is available to create a little childhood nostalgia for your wardrobe. If collared dresses and tops are too matronly for you, you could always give a detachable collar necklace a try - an easy and stylish fix for those who prefer not to commit too much to trends.

Peter Pan collars aside, Kimbra also appears to have a soft spot for black, lace, hats, or anything flamboyant and off the wall (especially on tour or on television!)But when she's dressing for day to day things - she incorporates both styles to create an adorably chic look that stands out without being TOO loud.

Get the Look:
Dress up your skinny jeans with a flowy summer top (This one features a Peter Pan collar!) Throw on a cute hat and some stacked up flat forms and you're good as gold. Accessorize minimally when wearing a combination of trends - you don't want to over do it!
